When it comes to the variability of intermittent resources, the costs are already in the system.  Peaker plants, reserves, and cycling costs are just the tip of the iceberg. Reining in uncertainty in variable power generation absorbs much of the infrastructure stress and many of the costs.

State and federal clean energy mandates are getting more aggressive, and system operators are requiring wind to provide reliability equal to traditional power generators.
